What to Do in Wellington?

2017-05-29 / wellingtonmap.co.nz / 1 Comment

Wellington is one of the most beautiful and comfortable cities in Oceania and once you have finished the cultural program (or are in the middle of it) you can easily get full pleasure from the city itself, including malls, cafes, bars, restaurants and the nightlife. Read below to know more.

Shopping

Wellington is a paradise for shopping addicts. Look for fashionable boutiques on Lambton Embankment, and ethnic jewelry and dresses in the Cuba area. Bring souvenirs of indigenous people of Maori: wooden figures or jewelry from shells and nacre. There are also local antiques you can buy on the market.

Choose pleasant and useful gift for relatives: products from alpaca wool. You can buy qualitative natural cosmetics, soap and aromatic oils made on the basis of local flowers and herbs. The New Zealand products are the best when it comes to cheeses, exotic fruit, wines and spices in the oldest market of the city – the Harbourside Market, which is opened every Sunday at the corner of Cable Street and Barnett Street. Almost all shops don’t work on Sundays, so it is better to plan purchases during the working week.

Sales with huge discounts take place after Christmas and in the middle of the summer.

Cafes and Restaurants of Wellington

There is a lot of cafes and restaurants in Wellington. Much attention paid to the food here. There are even food tours around the city. In the Cuba area, you can most often meet local cuisine, and closer to the Lambton Embankment, expensive restaurants are concentrated. In the Waterfront quartal you can visit the cafes with very democratic prices and outstanding menu.

The main feature of the New Zealand cuisine that surprises travelers is the unexpected mix of products and bright taste. here, you can taste cuisines of almost all european countries, apparently because there are a lot of immigrants here. At the same time, almost all foods have unexpected ingredients added by creative local population. Fast food lovers will not be disappointed as well, but it is still better to try something new while you are in Wellington.

Tourists who aren’t afraid of exotic dishes can taste meat of an opossum, snails, scorpions and even eyes of sheep. Of course, such food is served not in each cafe, but it is rather easy to find it. The lunch at restaurant with the ethnic cuisine and a glass of local wine costs 30-40 NZD for each person, and it is possible to have a meal in cafe for 15 NZD.

The best places to eat are Logan Brown restaurant, Hippopotamus restaurant and Cocktail Bar, Whitebait, The Larder, The Chocolate Fish Cafe, Cin Cin, Ombra, Giddy-Up.

Am I the only one that feels paying $12.99 for 5 plastic bags (not even recycled plastic) - @ $2.60 per bag - is totally and utterly ridiculous? The fact that we HAVE to buy the bags otherwise the rubbish will not be collected by the wellington council seems absolutely ludicrous. I prefer not buying plastic in the first place ANYWAY and now I have to buy them @ $2.60 each just to end up in the landfill and if you use biodegradable bags the city council will not collect your bag?? Come on Wellington this is CRAZY - Wake up and smell the rubbish.

*** "Well I have stated my point in the original post - I have a wheelie bin an use it for my recycling - I put out my yellow plastic bag only every - 3 weeks and 1 bag only - I am fully aware of how much rubbish I generate and I do not throw away anything that I can either compost or recycle. Thank you for informing me that the amount for the bag included the price for the collection etc (was not aware of this - only immigrate to NZ 6 months ago and expected rates included rubbish collection - foolish me) But I still feel that I have the right to not have to buy more plastic when I painstaking try to minimize my plastic consumption in the first place! I will happily pay the same amount for a biodegradable bag " ***
